About the Artist
Nancy Keane, a native of New Jersey, has for many years called the Washington, DC area home. With a degree in interior design, she began her professional career working at textile showrooms and designing residential interiors before ultimately concentrating on commercial design and space planning.
After taking time to raise her son, Nancy began studying oil painting (still life, portraiture and landscape) with Jill Banks at the Great Falls School of Art in 2009. Her art education continued under many instructors including Qiang Huang, Nicholaus Aram, Maggie Siner, David Cheifetz, and Trisha Adams, as she developed and refined her abilities. Later, under the instruction of Jennifer Duncan, she developed an artistic practice in abstract acrylics as well. Interest in experimentation with texture and different media led Nancy to her current work utilizing cold wax and oils in abstract art.
Drawings and paintings are typically rendered from life, as this method affords the best opportunity to observe the interplay of light and shadow, subject and background, texture and color. When traveling, Nancy seeks out subjects and records her experiences via a series of reference sketches and photographs for use later in the studio. Delving into art has been akin to opening one's eyes for the first time; capturing on canvas and paper all the subtle colors, unique textures and complex shadows that had previously slipped by without notice. In that way, artistic learning is an endless discovery offering continual challenges.
Nancy’s art has been selected for inclusion in many group shows at the Art League Gallery at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, VA and she has been featured as the cover artist in élan magazine (January 2017).
